Jewelry – a magical word that exudes bright smiles, diamond-like glittering eyes and deep, longing sighs. Ever since the human race evolved into an intelligent straight-backed species, there are evidences that jewels in the form of precious crude metals and stones were collected and considered to be forms of splendor. There are several archeological findings of hand-made simple and elegant jewelry in various parts of the world. No wonder that in the modern age, jewelry has gained such an important status in the global market and a nation’s fortune is decided upon its possession and utilization of gold and diamond mines.

Thing One and Thing Two Costumes Guide

Know a couple of mischief makers?

Think their old costume of dressing up as two peas in a pod is just not doing the trick? For any set of two whether twins, friends, or partners in crime dressing up as Dr. Seuss's Thing One and Thing Two is a terrific idea. Even while finding themselves in the middle of trouble, the dynamic duo are always having fun. And who could argue? With a red fleece body and electric blue hair life is nothing but a game. For parents with little time to spare these costumes can be put together quickly and economically. You will be able to take credit for two fantastic looking costumes, without breaking your back to do so.

Putting together the costume

Thing One and Thing Two Costumes Guide

You have many different options for putting together the costume. Easiest of all is buying already made outfits. Another simple solution is finding a plain set of matching red pants and a long sleeve shirt. For infants you might be able to get away with a one piece red sleeper made out of fleece. You will want the "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" logo across the center of the costume, so again an already made costume might be easiest. If you decide to make your own head to your local art supply store for white felt, black iron letters, and sewing equipment.

Start by tracing a small round plate onto two pieces of white felt and then cut out the pieces you need. Next iron on the letters to spell out Thing 1 and Thing 2 accordingly. Once your logos are complete you can sew or pin them onto the tops of your red costumes. Thing 1 and Thing 2 are nice and hair from shoulders to toe, so if you happen to have red shoes, lace them up. You can try using red felt or a red magic marker to color shoes of any other shade.

The arguably best part of Thing 1 and Thing 2 is their one of a kind hair. Fluffy bright blue and a tad eccentric, nothing else is like a Thing 1 and Thing 2 hair do. Trying to get away with normal hair dye certainly wont do. Having the right blue wig will make your costume complete and may come in handy for any other occasion to dress up. This Halloween show off that special bond and love for one of the greatest authors of all time while staying comfortable in a red fleece. For a family of three, thing one and thing two accompanied by a cat in the hat can be a great idea. Staying true to a Dr. Seuss theme might even win you some extra candy while trick or treating.

The Events in a Rodeo - What to Expect

Although they have been a part of American culture for decades, many people have never been to a rodeo. With their increasing popularity, some might be interested in going, but a little unsure at what takes place. Let's take a look at an average rodeo and what the first time attendee might expect.

First of all, professional rodeos in North America come under the umbrella of both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). Other governing bodies exist for children's, high school, college level, senior, Native Americans and other minority groups.

The events in a modern professional rodeo can be divided up into two categories; rough stock events and timed events. The major rodeo events are:

The Events in a Rodeo - What to Expect

Rough Stock Rodeo Events:

Bronc riding - perhaps one of the most iconic of the rodeo events. Riders try to stay on the horse for 8 seconds. They are not allowed to touch the horse with their free hand. A maximum of 50 points is given to both the rider and the horse. Both scores are added up for the total with scores in the 80 point range being very good and scores in the 90s being outstanding. Bronc riding is further divided into bareback bronc riding and saddle bronc riding.

Bull riding - essentially the same concept as bronc riding, but due to the size and unpredictability of the animal, bull riding is considerably more dangerous.

Timed Rodeo Events:

Calf roping - rodeo's oldest timed event, a cowboy chases after a calf, throws a lariat or lasso around the calf's neck, dismounts, throws the calf to the ground and then ties 3 of it's 4 feet together.

Breakaway roping - a type of roping where the calf is not thrown to the ground and tied. Instead, a very short rope with a flag attached is tied to the saddle. Once the calf is roped, the horse stops and the rope "breaks away" from the saddle.

Team roping - this involves two people lassoing and restraining a full sized steer. One person will lasso the horns while the other lassos the legs. The riders work together so the steer will lose balance and lie down.

Barrel racing - an event based on speed and agility. Barrels are set up in a cloverleaf pattern. Riders will gallop around them as quickly and gracefully as possible without knocking them over. At most levels of rodeo this is a women's event.

Steer wrestling - much like it sounds, a rider will jump off his horse, grab a running steer by their horns and attempt to wrestle them to the ground. Most likely the most dangerous event in the entire rodeo.

Goat tying - a rider approaches a tethered goat, jumps off and, similar to calf roping, throws the goat to the ground and ties 3 of its feet together. Intended for younger participants to gain skills associated with calf roping, it is not part of the actual rodeo competition.

Although not part of the competition itself, many rodeos begin with a Grand Entry where riders carrying various flags and banners enter the arena with the playing of the national anthem to follow. Variety acts, including musicians or trick riders, may take part in the rodeo also.

A big part of history and American culture, rodeos are always interesting and often great fun - especially once you know what events to expect.

Cowboy Movies

Since I grew up on a ranch, I've always been partial to cowboy movies. Whether they're set in the Old West or modern times, these tales feature brave men and women struggling to make a living off the sweat of their brow. The stories are distinctly American, and any resident of the U.S. is bound to feel their rugged individualism come bubbling to the surface (at least until the end credits).

Ride 'Em Cowboy (1942) - The comedy team of Abbott and Costello put on their boots for this hilarious tale of a western novelist (Dick Foran) who wants to learn how to be a real cowboy. Abbott and Costello bumble onto the scene while being pursued by Indians, and the film climaxes with a spirited competition at the state rodeo championship. Filled with singing and dancing, Ride 'Em Cowboy is western fun for the whole family.

My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys (1991) - Having been injured in a rodeo event, a cowboy (Scott Glenn) returns home to his family and gets drawn into romance and familial squabbles. But before long, he's ready to get back in the saddle and redeem himself. An inspirational tale of a rodeo competitor, the film features a strong supporting cast including Kate Capshaw, Ben Johnson, Gary Busey, Tess Harper, Balthazar Getty, Clarence Williams III, and Mickey Rooney.

Cowboy Movies

Tom Horn (1980) - Steve McQueen stars in this film based on the real-life writing of Tom Horn, a noted scout and gunfighter during the waning days of the Old West. As he hunts down cattle rustlers and makes them pay for their crimes, a politically ambitious lawman (Billy Green Bush) plans to frame Horn and have him removed permanently. Co-starring Linda Evans, Richard Farnsworth, and Slim Pickens, Tom Horn paints a poignant picture of the death of the west and it's old-fashioned moral code.

The Big Trail (1930) - John Wayne gets his first staring role in this epic Raoul Walsh film about the challenges faced by those traveling the Oregon Trail in the 1800's. Shot with an early widescreen process and in five different states, The Big Trail was an ambitious piece of filmmaking (especially for 1930). Co-starring Ward Bond, Tyrone Power Sr., Marguerite Churchill, and Iron Eyes Cody.

Hud (1963) - Paul Newman is Hud, "the man with the barbed wire soul." Set in modern-day Texas, the film revolves around Hud's struggles with his stubborn father (Melvyn Douglas) and the heartbreak it brings both men. Hud's nephew (Brandon de Wilde) is caught in the middle of the conflict, as is the family's attractive housekeeper, Alma (Patricia Neal). Receiving seven Academy Award nominations, Hud won Oscars for Best Cinematography (James Wong Howe), Best Supporting Actor (Douglas, and Best Actress (Neal). In my opinion, the best modern-day cowboy movie ever made.

The Far Country (1955) - Set in Alaska, this western stars Jimmy Stewart as a rugged pioneer who decides to drive a herd of cattle to the Yukon and then participate in the Klondike gold rush. Along the way, he makes an enemy in the form of a corrupt judge (John McIntire) and later attracts the romantic affections of the same individual's female business associate (Ruth Roman). The fourth of five westerns Stewart made with director Anthony Mann, each motion picture featured the protagonist riding the same horse and wearing the same hat. Also starring Walter Brennan and Harry Morgan.

That wraps up our look at some of the great cowboy movies currently available for purchase or rental. Online services such as Netflix carry many more, and a search on the Internet will reveal hundreds of other titles for your enjoyment. So dust off your chaps, put away the saddle, and prepare to get roped in by one of the most entertaining film genres around.

You can choose from among standard with dry facilities offered or premium with low pressure water and electricity. If you want to be near the action VIP camping is nearer the launch sites. The President's compound offers even more - an exhilarating view of the launch site.

Hot air balloon rides are also available. Experience floating in a gondola or wicker basket and get a bird's eye view of the area and the Sandia Mountains. You can even help launch the balloon, pack it after the flight but you can't keep it. Breakfast and toast is offered instead after the flight. Balloon flights are offered year round.

Albuquerque ballooning is such a fun activity; pilots can even make certain arrangements to accommodate any of your special needs.

Hot air balloons are a thing of beauty. Made from either nylon or polyester and coated with silicone or neoprene, the bag is then inflated with gas from a burner. Watching a balloon taking up shape is a wonderful sight- a lifeless piece of fabric emerging to a magnificent beast.

Balloons come in all shapes and sizes, with beautiful colors and design. In the artistic vision part of the show, artists show off their paintings in their balloons. For unusual balloon shapes like animals and household objects the special shape rodeo of balloons cannot be missed. Then at night balloons light up against the dark sky in the Balloon Glow and in the Night Magic Glow exhibitions.

Enjoy your trip to Albuquerque, the ballooning capital of the world.
