Mutton Bustin

Mutton Bustin' is an exciting event for the boys and girls who want to experience the excitement of riding in the rodeo arena. The dream of being a cowboy/cowgirl can be lived out in a challenging and fun atmosphere through the sport of mutton bustin.. In any sporting event especially for children their safety is of utmost importance for example in the sport of football, baseball or hockey the proper gear for protection is strictly adhered to .It is no different in the sport of mutton bustin the proper gear consisting of a protective vest and a helmet should be worn. A release/waiver of liability and indemnity agreement must be signed by the parent, similar to football, baseball, etc. There is also an age restriction usually children age 4 to 9. There is also a weight restriction; a child can weigh no more than of 55 lbs. This is for the safety of the sheep so they are not injured.

Education about the sport of Mutton Bustin is valuable and helps to build confidence. Usually a cowboy and sometimes a bull fighting clown will give the instruction to the little wranglers. During the time of instruction the little cowboy/girl learn the proper way to mount the sheep, the cowboy will assist them onto the back of the sheep they will also be shown the proper way to secure themselves and hold on for the ride.

.In the rodeo arena the little wrangler may be on the sheep's back inside of a bucking chute usually a cowboy will be inside the chute securing the child until the chute is open, when the chute is open the cowboy lets go and the mutton bustin ride begins. The ride is timed for 6 seconds. The cowboy/girl who holds on for the 6 seconds and has a good ride is the winner. If a child falls off he is disqualified. There is an assigned judge helping with the scoring similar to a referee at a sporting event. The winner receives a prize at the end of mutton bustin event.

In any rodeo event the livestock play a major role. They are a valuable investment and are treated with the utmost care. The proper feed, water, bedding, and the health of the stock is a very important, with out them the show doesn't go on. There is no way a stock contractor would want to inflict harm on his rodeo stock it would be like shooting himself in the foot, so to speak.

General Rules for the sport of Mutton Bustin

A release /waiver of liability and indemnity agreement must be signed by the parent or a legal guardian.

children ages 4 to age 9 can compete (this may vary depending on who is hosting the mutton bustin)

weight restriction a child can weigh no more than 55 pounds. This insures the safety of the sheep

All children are required to wear a vest and a helmet

Timed event: 6 second ride.
